When to Use ProSource Liquid?
ProSource Liquid’s unique formulation combining 10g protein, 100kcal and low electrolyte levels in just 30ml of liquid make it the ideal supplement for patients suffering from or at risk of protein energy malnutrition, those on renal dialysis, and for patients on a fluid restricted diet.
Renal Dialysis Diets
It’s generally accepted that renal dialysis diets are hard to follow because of the fluid and electrolyte restrictions required.
ProSource Liquid is the ideal protein supplement for HD patients:
- Clinically proven to raise serum albumin levels in HD patients1
- Concentrated protein source (10g) in the smallest fluid serving size (30ml)
- Low in electrolytes - sodium, potassium & phosphorus
- Can be added to the food patients are already eating to make the foods nutrient dense.
- Due to mixing, commonly used powdered protein supplements require up to 8 times the fluid volume to deliver an equal amount of protein.

Fluid Restricted Diets
It has often been difficult for fluid restricted patients, such as those with congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, hydrocephalus and other diseases, to work the necessary protein levels into their diets.
Due to clumping, powdered protein supplements have to be mixed into a large volume of liquid; and commonly used sip feeds contain a large fluid volume for the amount of protein they deliver.
New flavoured ProSource Liquid can be taken as a 'truly effective' shot, whilst ProSource Liquid Original can be mixed into everyday foods, or pureed and soft foods without increasing fluid intake and without any of the mixing problems often associated with powdered protein supplements.
Nutritionally at risk
Patients suffering from loss of appetite due to a variety of conditions such as dementia, cancer, surgery, anorexia, Aids, inflammatory bowel disease, dysphagia, and protein energy malnutrition can result in a dietary intake deficit which produces a net protein and calorie loss. In some cases, where patients do not consume enough overall calories, the body utilises protein for energy, which further depletes protein stores.
Conventional nutritionally complete supplements typically provide less than 2 grams of protein per 30 mL, meaning that 5 times the volume is required to provide a comparable amount of protein as ProSource Liquid. Due to mixing, commonly used powdered protein supplements require up to 8 times the fluid volume to deliver an equal amount of protein.
Cancer cachexia
Cachexia, or body wasting is typically seen in patients with advanced cancer. Patients often have reduced appetite, or none at all as a result of radiation and/or chemotherapy treatment. Stopping weight loss and improving nutritional status becomes a challenge well suited to a low volume, high protein and calorie dense supplement.
New flavoured ProSource Liquid can be taken as a 'truly effective' shot, whilst ProSource Liquid Original can be mixed into everyday hot or cold foods to make visually appealing, appetizing, nutrient dense dishes that patients require when their appetite is suppressed by medications and/or medical treatment.
Tube feeding
ProSource Liquid is tube-feeding friendly. ProSource Liquid can be administered easily through a feeding tube and eliminates any usual concerns about clogging, saving crucial nursing time and money.
Pressure Ulcers and Wound Healing
The prevalence of pressure ulcers and wounds is a major concern, especially in long-term care patients. It has long been accepted that nutritional status is an independent risk factor for pressure ulcers. The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) recommends providing adequate protein for positive nitrogen balance for an individual with a pressure ulcer. Specifically the recommendations state giving patients with pressure ulcers, or those at risk of developing pressure ulcers, a minimum of 30-35 kcal per kg of body weight with 1-1.5 g/kg/day protein.1
